In 1765, Juan Gutierrez, a Bernalillo resident representing 8 local families, petitioned the Governor of the New Mexico Territory to forward their request to the King of Spain for a land grant. The petition was granted on January 13, 1768 to 21 families and named San Antonio de las Huertas Land Grant. Antonio Gurule, Dr. James L. Gonzales' great grandfather, was one of the original 21 families 5 generations ago. Come hear how Antonio Gurule and the Gurule lineage has struggled to keep the land from those who recognized its wealth and sought to exploit its vital resources.
Dr. James L. Gonzales is a 9th generation "Gurule" whose mother was born and raised in Placitas, New Mexico. Dr. Gonzales completed his BA in K-12 Education, his Masters degree in Education and his PhD on Educational Policy, Organization and Leadership. He was an educator in Los Angeles and Bernalillo before retiring as Director of K-12 Programs for the Pueblo of Santa Ana.
